On the Ultimate Homemaker's Guide

You can call me what you like – Stay-at-home Mother, Soccer Mom (my kids do not play soccer but I do the whole shuttle to–and-fro bit), Lady of Leisure (I wish!), Desperate Housewife (nothing desperate about me!), Domestic Goddess (not quite, more of Martha Stewart in-training)… but I prefer Homemaker. Yup, you read it right. It’s the new millennium - women are taking over government and the workplace, and I want to be called a Homemaker.

Well, that’s what I do. I make a home for my family. Aside from making sure everyone’s needs are met, I keep the house in order – rooms are cleaned, laundry is done, pantry is stocked – I run a pretty tight ship – with help. But it wasn’t always this way…

Like many before me, I only planned until “Happily Ever After.” And like so many women of my generation, I did not pay much attention to the trivial pursuit of (gasp!) running a home. I did not concern myself with anything domestic because these things were always taken care of in my mother’s household. Besides, I am an independent woman with a career! How hard could it be?

Growing up in the States, chores are not new to me – making a bed, washing dishes, setting the table, doing the laundry – these things I can do in my sleep. As an editor for a fashion & beauty glossy I learned how to iron clothes in no time for shoots. Being fortunate enough to have house help, it seemed like I had everything covered, so what’s the problem?

It’s all the details that go into all the work. Like how do I keep whites white, how do I remove soap scum from bathroom tiles, how do you clean an oven, how do you iron and fold a fitted sheet, how do you care for upholstered furniture, how do you clean wood floors without damaging the finish????

Everything you need to know, you will find in Martha Stewart’s Homekeeping Handbook, the Essential Guide to Caring for Everything in Your Home. Just as the title suggests, this book is my go-to reference for anything to do with my home. It’s the ultimate encyclopedia for everything in your home. I love this book! I strongly believe it’s the first book anyone should buy when starting his or her own home.

It teaches you how to manage the upkeep of your home and everything in it. More than just a handbook on how to keep your home clean, this book covers the upkeep of the appliances, tools, furnishings, and surfaces found in each and every room. Martha Stewart will guide you on the proper ways to routinely clean and periodically maintain everything in the home, including dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, polishing, scrubbing, waxing – you name it! She even shares techniques to ensure your home is running properly and safely, such as recognizing when to clean vents, fixing a leaky faucet, and eradicating pests.

Sigh! I Martha! - KGG

This One's for The Girls

A lot has been said about Girls Night Out (Come on, even 17-year old Miley Cyrus is singing about girlfriend power “Let’s go GNO, let’s go it’s a girls night…”) but the truth is…as fun as it is to get all dolled up and paint the town red, sometimes the best kind of night with the girls is the one when we actually do not go out and our main agenda is to simply be together and laugh. So gather round the girls, it’s a Girls Night IN

WHAT: Movie Night

WHO: The Girls (My LLFs)

WHEN: Pick a day when everybody’s free (Ours was last Thursday night)

WHERE: Chez Paulyn

WHY: Simply because we’re fab and we deserve a little girl time

A week before:

The food assignments have been made. We’re all thinking the same thing – our love/hate relationship with carbs! Think of the two major food groups for nights like these – sweet (chocolate) and salty (chips). Aside from grocery shopping and cooking, there is also a lot of personal preparation involved before this night of indulgence - think running that extra mile or skipping that daily can of Coke. We girls do not do anything halfway, if we're gonna eat, we're so gonna EAT.

Finally…it’s time to bring out the carbs!!! Bring. It. On. You’ll definitely know everybody’s ready to pig out just by looking at the outfits of choice – caftans, loose dresses and boyfriend button downs.

MENU:
Assorted chips with mango and avocado salsa
Hors d’oeuvres from that wonderful hotel across Greenbelt called New World
Lobster pasta (Paulyn, this was killer!)

Spaghetti with anchovy sauce (Kudos to DM, under the tutelage of Sra. Liamzon)

Salmon baked in foil (We definitely need the omega-3 fatty acids to counter everything else on the menu)
And don't forget to dial 887-8888 for some KFC...We're going all the way, Baby!!!

Usually sangria is our best friend (2 jarras isn't enough for this posse), but for that night those alcohol-infused fruits were just not enough for dessert...

Classically dee-lish.

When there was simply no more room in our tummies (it was so aptly put - "If we rest for 10 minutes, we're going to feel how full we really are, so let's just keep on going...") it was time to pop in the movie and plop down in front of the TV. The lights were dimmed, blankets and pillows were passed around, and everybody got all comfy in their respective spots.

MOVIE: It's Complicated
Hilarious. The role was made for Alec Baldwin - he is so the new face of Dirty Old Men. We will forever love love love THE Meryl Streep. Very subtly lovable was Steve Martin. And Lake Bell? Just the sight of her made me feel the pounds creeping in. But all in all, the perfect choice for our GNI

Truth is, we all need a time out, a day off…when we don’t need to worry about concealer or mascara, when we give our footsies a break and embrace the reality that we are only 5’3 ½” (Even Posh understands how important That Extra Half an Inch is - Must I remind you, she did snag Becks), and when we give counting calories a rest. So let’s give ourselves a break, sometimes girls really just wanna have fun. Hail to Cyndi Lauper. She got it. - KAB

Bolso babe Jenny is for RENT

We, bolso babes, pride ourselves in our diversity. As they say, variety is the spice of life, right? If this is true, then it must be the main ingredient that keeps our friendship working. You see, the four of us belong to a group of nine girlfriends - we collectively call ourselves The LLFs. All together, we are always sweet (so we'd like to believe), sometimes sour, definitely tangy, and on rare occasions, very very bitter...as all girls are, right? We have been rah rah girls for one another, always cheering the loudest for every triumph. So now we applaud our girl, Jenny, who Aretha Franklin must have been talking about when she said that "being a singer is a natural gift." Then again, we always knew this girl could sing...

9 Works Theatrical’s new production RENT opened this year’s local musical theatre scene last February 5, at the Carlos P. Romulo auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati City.

RENT is set in New York City's gritty East Village, and this revolutionary rock musical is an imaginative retelling of the classic Puccini opera, La Boheme. This unforgettable and timeless story of a group of starving artists, who, despite poverty and illness, learn to fall in love and find their voices, brings a universal message of hope for everyone.

Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize, RENT with Book, Music and Lyrics by the late Jonathan Larson, has made a lasting mark on Broadway with songs that rock and a story that really resonates.

Gian Magdangal leads the cast as Roger Davis, a songwriter who is HIV positive, with Fred Lo as Mark Cohen, an independent filmmaker and Roger's roommate and Nicole Asensio as Mimi Márquez, an exotic dancer with HIV. The cast also features OJ Mariano as Tom Collins, a gay philosophy professor and anarchist with AIDS; Carla Guevara-Laforteza as Maureen Johnson, a bisexual performance artist; Noel Rayos as Benjamin 'Benny' Coffin III, the local landlord and a former room mate of Roger, Mark, Collins, and Maureen; Job Bautista as Angel Dumott Schunard, a gay drag queen percussionist with AIDS and JENNY VILLEGAS as Joanne Jefferson, a lawyer, who is Maureen's partner. Ensemble members include Ring Antonio, Peachy Atilano, Johann Dela Fuente, Harold Cruz, Gary Junsay, Raul Montesa, Anna Santamaria and Mark Tayag.

Robbie Guevara directs RENT .

Show dates are February 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 26, 27 and 28.

Best of Beauty Buys

One of the perks of my job as a magazine editor is that I get hundreds of beauty products every year. I have tested all of them and while some have irritated my skin, and others are not worth the price or hype, I’ve discovered some favorites that I always go back to and use till the very last drop:

Shiseido’s The Skincare Extra Gentle Cleansing Foam – My skin is on the sensitive side so it has been quite a challenge finding the right cleanser. This is super mild, doesn’t dry out my skin and removes every trace of dirt and makeup. Available at Greenbelt 5. Photo from asia.shiseido.com

La Prairie Anti-Aging Eye Cream SPF15 – Firms, hydrates and protects without that heavy, sticky feel. Quite pricey but at least it saves me a trip to the plastic surgeon in the long run. Available at Rustan’s Makati. Photo from shoplaprairie.com.

Lancôme’s Bi-Facil Double Action Eye Makeup Remover - Non-greasy and removes even waterproof mascara with a few quick swipes. Available at Rustan’s. Photo from lancome-usa.com.

YSL Rouge Volupté # 12 - A bright burgundy that instantly brightens up my face even if I don’t wear anything else. It’s creamy, long-lasting and has SPF 15. Available at Rustan’s Makati. Photo from yslbeautyus.com.

The Body Shop Body Butter - A mega moisturizer that never fails to leave my skin silky soft and smooth. It comes in a variety of scents but my favorites are Mango and Shea. Available at Shangri-La Plaza. Photo from thebodyshop.co.uk.

Shu Uemura Lash Curler - Simply the best in giving oomph-worthy lashes that open and define eyes. Available at Rustan’s. Photo from shuuemura-usa.com.

La Mer The Hand Treatment - One of the biggest beauty mistakes? Neglecting your hands. They are constantly exposed and utilized so they can show signs of aging right away. This is light yet effectively moisturizes and heals parched hands. I use it on my heels and elbows, too! Available at Rustan’s Makati. Photo from cremedelamer.com.

Burt’s Bees Coconut Foot Crème - Dry, cracked heels are never a pretty sight. Slather on this super salve at night, slip on some socks and wake up to spanking new soles in the morning. Available at Beauty Bar. Photo from burtsbees.com.

Laura Mercier Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer - Has SPF20 and gives sheer, buildable coverage that’s perfect for daily use. Available at Rustan’s. Photo from lauramercier.com.

Pureology Essential Repair System – Strengthens and protects my color-treated hair to prevent it from breaking and fading. Contains no sulfates and salt so it’s gentle to use every day. Available at select salons. Photo from pureology.com.au. - ROC
